From today, let us have a greater love for Guyana than ever before (Happy 51st Independence Guyana.

Happy 51st Independence Guyana. From this Independence Day, let us have a greater love for Guyana by being more patriotic. Some of us are more patriotic for other nations than we are for Guyana. We seem to be more proud of other nations than we are of Guyana. What we fail to realize is the fact that those nations are what they are because they are proud of themselves. They first loved themselves then they were loved by others. They have been so patriotic that it has influenced the world. It is time for all Guyanese to be patriotic and be more patriotic than ever before.

Here are some suggestions I have regarding us being more patriotic:

1. Every home should have at least one Guyana flag.
2. Every business place, organization, or company should have the Guyana flag on display in a prominent place. This includes mobile food outlets, corner stands, and snow-cone carts.
3. Guyanese music should dominate the air time on all local radio stations on national holidays and especially on Independence Day. Guyana probably has greatest number of patriotic songs in the Caribbean. Each one of those songs should be played on Independence Day. In addition, Guyanese music should be given more air time than it is presently being given every day of the year.
4. Every vehicle should have a Guyana flag. I have observed that some cars and buses have flags for several nations but none for Guyana.
5. Keep your Guyanese accent wherever you go. Be proud to be a Guyanese. Don’t replace your Guyanese accent with a foreign accent.
6. Wear Guyana clothing at least once per week, every week of the year, every year (hats, pins, chains, jerseys, etc). Wear clothing with “Guyana” on it and clothing with national symbols whether you are in Guyana or overseas.  Represent Guyana where ever you go.
7. Especially when you are overseas, when you have to sing, sing a Guyanese song. When you have to do anything, represent your Guyanese identity. Don't leave persons to wonder which nation you come from.
8. Don’t bad talk your country.  We have it better off in Guyana than in many parts of the world. We also have more freedom here than you will ever have in many places.
9. Especially for persons overseas, remember that there is no place like home. Don’t sell out all of your property in Guyana when you are going overseas. Remember that it is possible to be deported.
10. Sing national songs in the schools and have school competitions using same.
11. Our national flag and national symbols should be painted on the outside of all nursery schools.
12. Buy more local products. This benefits our economy.
13. When it is possible, use your vacation to travel around Guyana and spend time at local destinations. There are many beautiful resorts, waterfalls, creeks, rapids… in Guyana.
